What Aberrations Offer The Best Chance For Expanding The Depth Of Field Of Presbyopes And Pseudophakes?

SA & DOF Spherical aberrations (SA) have been shown to both expand depth of focus (DOF) and alter spherical refractions. We modeled these changes induced by both primary and secondary SA. In this figure we see that Z60 expands DOF more than Z40, but interestingly, this is due to the r4 term imbedded in Zernike secondary SA. When other HOAs are added (thin lines) the refractive lens that optimizes IQ remains unchanged for Z40, but changes from + to – with + Z60.
