Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Who are your study participants?

In general, we seek people with normal or corrected-to-normal vision. Myopia, hyperopia, and/or astigmatism will not prevent your participation in a study; however, ocular or systemic diseases could disqualify you from participating.

  2. Will I be paid for my participation in a study?

Depending on the study, you may be compensated with cash, glasses, frames, contact lenses, and/or free optometry care.

  3. Does the Borish Center offer treatment for ocular diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, or diabetic retinopathy?

The Borish Center does not treat ocular diseases; however, the IU School of Optometry's Community Eye Care Center in Bloomington provides treatment for various ocular disorders. Please contact the staff at the Community Eye Care Center for more information. The school's Indianapolis Eye Care Center also sees patients with ocular disease.

  4. Do you continue the work of Merrill Allen, PhD?

"Dr. Allen was a former faculty member who had been retired for many years prior to his death in December 2003. The IU School of Optometry did not endorse and was not involved in his research with the TENS units. No one at the school is working with any of his units, and we do not know of any source for the units. To our knowledge, there have been no controlled clinical trials that indicate the effectiveness of the techniques." --Gerald E. Lowther, OD, PhD (Dean, IU School of Optometry)

If you are seeking treatment for macular degeneration, please contact the IU School of Optometry's Community Eye Care Center or Indianapolis Eye Care Center.
