More About Xalatan

Pfizer's Xalatan Sterile Ophthalmic Solution (latanoprost ophthalmic solution) is a prescription medicine used to lower intraocular pressure in patients with ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma. It is supplied as a sterile, isotonic, buffered aqueous solution of latanoprost (a prostaglandin analogue).

Be aware that Xalatan has been associated with herpetic lesions.

Possible side effects of Xalatan:
  • Darkening of iris color
  • Increased eyelid pigmentation
  • Hypertrichosis (increase in vellus hair--the non-pigmented, fine, "peach fuzz" hair covering the body); eyelash thickening
  • Conjunctival hyperemia
  • Allergy
  • Cystoid macular edema (speculative)
  • Anterior uveitis
  • Punctuate corneal erosions
  • Corneal pseudodendrites, herpes keratitis, herpes dermatitis
  • Systemic hypertension?
  • Migraine headaches?
  • Vague flu-like symptoms and joint pain?

Use Xalatan with caution in patients with:
  • A history of uveitis
  • Aphakia
  • YAG capsulotomy
  • An anterior IOL
  • History of Herpes simplex
