Case 6: The Case of the Bronzed Beauty

THE PARLOR . . .
The answer revealed: Canthaxanthine retinopathy

Canthaxanthine is a non-prescription tanning agent (Orobronze). It is also used to treat vitiligo and photosensitivity disorders. With time, multiple refractile deposits ring the macula. Appearance is very consistent from patient to patient. As a general rule, it is not sight threatening. The crystals resorb after medicine is discontinued.

Canthaxanthine is found naturally in crustaceans and some pink fish. Ingestion of 60mg or more per day universally leads to retinopathy over time.

Below are examples of canthaxanthine retinopathy from other patients.
