Paraoptometric personnel are playing an increasing role in decision making with regard to patient care, eyecare products, and services for the optometric patient. Increasing the professionalism and competency levels of paraoptometrics has proven to be a key ingredient to the growth of an optometric practice.

The Paraoptometric Certificate Program was developed by faculty members of the Indiana University School of Optometry. The program has expanded and is now being administered by OPAT (Optometric Assistant & Technician Program).
The program is designed so that all paraoptometric personnel can begin to work on improving their skill levels through a planned educational process. Students in the program can increase their professionalism by progressing through three educational levels. All paraoptometric personnel must enter the program at Level 1.
