The eye care center in Guanajuato is a permanent external rotation site choice for the IU School of Optometry's 4th-year student clinicians. During the 12-week rotation, the students observe a wide variety of ocular and systemic health problems. The rotation provides the students with an excellent clinical and cultural experience.

Plans are being made to eventually add a resident to the staff. A resident, serving as an additional faculty member, would allow for student interns from other optometry schools to rotate through the clinic. Currently, each student clinician examines approximately 7 patients per day (or about 100 per week). With a resident on staff, this pace could be doubled.
