Risk Factors for Angle Closure Glaucoma There are numerous risk factors (including race, gender, and refractive error) associated with angle closure glaucoma. People of Southeast Asian and Japanese descent have a higher incidence of angle closure glaucoma than open angle glaucoma. Also, Caucasians are more likely to develop angle closure than African Americans. Females are more frequently diagnosed with angle closure than are males. It is likely to occur between the ages of 55 to 65. Another risk factor is the presence of hyperopia or farsightedness. This is due to hyperopes having smaller eyes leading to smaller anterior chamber depths and, thus, narrower angles than myopes (nearsighted people) or emmetropes (people who have no prescription).
