To improve the quality of vision health care for medically underserved residents of central Indiana through education, advocacy, and the services of optometrists and ophthalmologists.

Our vision is to reach all members of the community who need eye care services and link them to adequate resources through community collaborations. Our goal is to eliminate health disparities such that all individuals will have an opportunity for better health and stability.

Goals: |
- Raise public awareness on the importance of adult, youth, and infant visual health.
- Provide easier access to vision care services for medically underserved, low-income, and uninsured men, women, and children by coordinating resources of community organizations.
- Identify and refer individuals receiving vision care who are in need of additional health and social services.

Do I Qualify for ECCO? |
|
To qualify for ECCO eye exams and eyeglasses, you must:
- Live in Indiana within Marion, Hendricks, Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Morgan, Johnson, or Shelby Counties, and
- Have no health insurance, and
- Have a household income that is at or below 200% of the federal poverty level.
Call the ECCO office to fill out an application or apply online. We will verify your income and insurance coverage to ensure that you qualify. You will need to show us a picture ID.
In order to qualify for ophthalmic services, patients must have lived in the United States for at least the past six months with the intention of staying in the United States permanently.
If you do not qualify for our program, we can assist you in locating other vision and health resources.

Services We Provide
|
- Access to eye care professionals (optometrists and ophthalmologists) who are willing to offer donated services to those who are uninsured or underinsured.
- Access to ophthalmic services (including surgeries and consultation) for eye diseases such as, but not limited to: cataracts, glaucoma, retinopathy, and/or macular degeneration.
- Referrals to existing resources for other health and social service needs.
- Access to vision health educational material.
- Participation in community events such as health fairs and vision screenings.
- Partnership building with organizations to increase the number of resources available to underserved individuals.
- Advocacy for affordable medical services for medically underserved individuals in the community.
- A referral source for clients to find adequate optometric and ophthalmic services for vision health care regardless of insurance and income level.
- Community education sessions on vision awareness topics for small or large groups (usually presented by 4th-year optometry interns with supervision of an IU staff optometrist).
