Emergency Policies Specific to the AECC and the BCOR . . .

To report an emergency, call 9-911 from any clinic floor phone.

The following policies are a supplement to the Emergency Action Plan for IU School of Optometry. These policies apply to faculty, staff, interns, and patients of the Atwater Eye Care Center and the Borish Center for Ophthalmic Research.

In the event of:
Tornado Warning:
Evacuate interns, staff and patients down central staircase to basement. Use of the elevator is restricted to clinic personnel and others to move elderly and/or handicapped to the basement.
Fire:
Activate fire alarm if necessary. Call 9-911 and give IUPD, building name, floor, room # and type of incident. Red call box in the central lobby may be used if accessible. EVACUATE EVERYONE ON THE CLINIC FLOOR through the nearest stairwell. Do not use the elevator. The paging system will be used to direct people away from the fire if on the floor or in a particular stairwell. After exiting, walk to parking lot across the street. Patients, faculty, interns and staff in the following areas should exit through the stairwell listed.
  • East Wing (Primary Care and Pediatrics) should exit through east stairwell.
  • West Wing (Borish Center and Contact Lens) should exit through west stairwell.
  • Reception Area and Dispensary should exit through center stairwell and leave through the front door.

Earthquake:
Get under a desk, table or countertop or move to under a doorway. Stay clear of windows and bookcases. Do not use elevator. Do not leave the building until the quake has ended. Once outside, move away from the building.
Bomb Threat:
Remain calm and, if receiving the call, obtain as much information from the caller as possible. Call 9-911, notify supervisor, and then evacuate as in a fire but move people towards open grassy fields to the east and west of the building (a few lots down on the same side of the street.) Do not use fire alarm.
Bioterrorism:
Isolate cause, evacuate immediate area, and try to put a barrier between people and substance. Then, call 9-911. If agent is outdoors, call Physical Plant (5-8728) to turn off air handler.
