Dr. Arthur Bradley was actually rewarded twice recently, once when he received his promotion to full professor after a rigorous review by the school and campus--and again very recently when his baby girl was born. Congratulations and best wishes to the entire Bradley family. Dr. Susan Kovacich-Topp had a baby boy, Alexander, July 23rd. Congratulations to Sue and Jim. Sarah Dougherty, 4th-year student, was selected as the second place recipient of the 2001-2002 Corning Scholarship in a national competition. She received a stipend and plaque. Ingrid Goble, fourth year student, was selected as the first recipient of the AOA Sports Vision Section Student Congress Award based on the essay she submitted. She received the award and a check for $500 at the AOA Congress in Boston on June 29. Dr. (Cpt.) Greg Hutcheson, 1999 graduate, was the subject of an article in the April, 2001 issue of "Ironside," a publication for the 1st Army Armored Division, for his service to people in Kosovo. He was stationed at Camp Bondsteel in Kosovo and has volunteered to go into the communities to provide vision care to civilians. The School sent him some spectacles to use with these patients. Dr. Pete Kollbaum has been awarded an Ezell Fellowship from the American Optometric Foundation for the coming academic year. Dr. Victor Malinovsky who received the promotion to full clinical professor after rigorous review by the school and campus. Dr. Malinovsky is the first Bloomington campus faculty member to receive the rank of full clinical professor. Dr. Malinovsky was also recently appointed to the NBEO Council for Part III of the National Boards. Dr. S.P. Srinivas has been informed that he will receive the American Academy of Optometry 2001 Irvin and Beatrice Borish Award. This award, a plaque and stipend, is given to an individual who has shown exceptional promise to conduct independent optometric research related to etiology, prevention, detection, diagnosis, or management of clinical eye disorders within six years of completing formal training. Dr. Tom Stickel, a 2001 graduate, received the 2001 American Optometric Foundation's Biocompatibles EyeCare Innovative Research Award of $7000 in a national competition. Dr. Larry Thibos was quoted in the June 28 New York Times on his work concerning "electronic" spectacles. Dr. Laura Windsor, a 2001 graduate, received the Varilux National Case Report Competition Award. It was presented to her in June at the American Optometric Association meeting in Boston. Dr. Suresh Viswanathan was recently awarded a $50,000 grant from the American Federation for Aging Research for his research. The title of his project is "Identifying the retinal loci of age-related changes in dark-adapted vision." Dr. Ed Marshall was just notified that he has been selected as the recipient of the American Public Health Association Vision Care Section's Distinguished Service Award for 2001. He will receive the award at the American Public Health Association's annual meeting in Atlanta in October. Congratulations to Matt Lasley of the Student Administration Staff for being accepted to law school. We wish you well and will miss your expertise. David Goss just has his book "Introduction to the Optics of the Eye" co-authored with Roger West from Northeastern State University published by Butterworth-Heinemann. July 23-27: Dr. Hitzeman and six optometry students are attending the AAU Junior Olympics in Virginia Beach, Virginia to perform vision screenings of the athletes. The six optometry students are: Mike Main, Tsai Thomas, Kevin Smith, Monica Price, Amanda Corbett, Fran Nolten. August 3-5: Dr. Soni will be presenting a lecture on "Perspectives on Ophthalmic Optics Research" at the ASCO SIG meeting of Ophthalmic Optics faculty in Tampa, FL. Upcoming Continuing Education Programs:
August 4-10: Six post-doctorate/graduate students will be attending the 2nd Annual Summer School on Adaptive Optics at University of California, Santa Cruz. Participants include Xu Cheng, Xin Hong, Pete Kollbaum, Junle Qu, Huawei Zhao, and Fan Zhou. Travel, lodging, and board are furnished by the NSF Center for Adaptive Optics. Aug. 22-23: The Class of 2005 OD Orientation spans 2 days Wednesday, August 22nd, is an all-day event and includes the more traditional activities of welcoming the students; introducing them to each other, the faculty and staff; outlining the school's academic expectations; exposing them to the student organizations; and pairing them with their faculty mentor. The full-time faculty are invited to join us for the Bell-Duffens sponsored lunch at the IMU. Thursday, August 23rd the students will have an orientation to the computer cluster and other technology resources. September 3: All the optometry staff and faculty are invited to the Lowthers' for the annual start of the academic year picnic (5:00 pm). More details will follow. September 9-14: Drs. Soni, Wilson and I will be attending the International Society for Contact Lens Research at Sun Valley Idaho. Tough duty but someone has to do it! October 2: Student Fall Seminar and dinner will be held in the IMU Alumni Hall at 5:00 pm. This is a dinner sponsored by the Indiana Optometric Association. It is a great chance for students to meet practitioners from around the state, learn more about the profession, and have a free dinner. Optometry students from all four classes are encouraged to attend. October 3 & 4: IOA Fall Educational Seminar held at the IMU. October 3: Dedication of the remodeled Atwater clinic from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a short program at 6:00 pm. Everyone is invited to attend. October 27: Open House at the Optometry School from 1:00 to 4:00. I invite you to attend and especially encourage anyone who is considering optometry as a career to be there. It is open to the public and there will be tours of the research labs, clinics, teaching labs and seminars for prospective students. April: Dr. Denise Howard was on a health care career advisory panel for undergraduate students. She also attend the Practice Management Educators conference in Jacksonville, FL in April. April 26: The School of Optometry honored Dr. Thomas Eade (posthumously) and Jerry and Theresa Logan at the IUPUI Spirit of Philanthropy luncheon in Indianapolis. We enjoyed a great day with the Eade family and the Logans. We appreciate their support of the School of Optometry. May 6-7: Drs. Brooks, Marshall, Rivron, Soni and Sandi Pickel presented the paraoptometric program parts I and II at the Eyecare 2001 meeting in St. Charles, IL. May 9-15: I visited the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in Hong Kong as the Academic Advisory for the program. I reviewed and made a reported on the program for the university. May 21: Dr. Shaban Demirel and I attended the Whitewater Valley Optometric Society in Milroy, IN. Dr. Demirel gave an excellent CE on the interpretation of automated visual fields. We appreciate the hospitality of the society. May 23: The School's Curriculum Revision Committee met with outside consultants and selected students in an afternoon work session to study our curriculum and look at ways to improve and modify the curriculum. June 9-15: I attended a meeting of the International Advisory Board for the Optometry Research Center of the Ministry of Public Health for the People's Republic of China in Shanghai. I also made a presentation at the 2nd International Conference on Ophthalmology and Optometry in Shanghai. June 13: Drs. Marshall and Soni taught the paraoptometric courses at the IOA program in Indianapolis. June 14-15: Dr. Sarita Soni attended the NEI National Eye Advisory Council in Washington D.C. June 18: Dr. Susana Chung lectured at the 2001 IU Mini University. The topic was "Seeing into the future: new technology for maintaining and enhancing vision in the aging eye." She also served as an ad-hoc grant reviewer for NIH in July. Dr. Ed Marshall recently gave the following presentations: "Primary eye health care in rural health clinic settings," at the Indiana Rural Health Association in French Lick; "All citizens are not equal: racial and ethnic health disparities in Indiana" at the Lake County Minority Health Coalition in Gary, Indiana; "An Indiana perspective on the future of health care" at the Public Health Seminar, Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis. June 24-26: I attended the Am. Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO) Academic Officers meeting on outcomes assessment and the annual ASCO meeting. I also attended the National Board of Examiners in Optometry Board meeting at June 26-27. June 25-26: Dr. Soni attended the summer meeting of the Executive Council of the American Academy of Optometry in Boston. June 27-30: Several faculty members attended the AOA convention in Boston where the school held the annual Foley House Breakfast. Dr. Jeff Marshall received the Foley House Key Award. July 6: Drs. Nguyen and Soni visited the U.C. Berkeley School of Optometry to discuss the contact lens curriculum and Dr. Nguyen later visited Contex, Inc. and the Southern California College of Optometry. July 13 & 14: Drs. Marshall, Hitzeman and I attended the summer board meeting of the Indiana Optometric Association at the Fourwinds on Lake Monroe. We had dinner at our home on Saturday evening for those attending the meeting. July 19-21 : Dr. Ed Marshall, Pam Ragsdale and I attended the National Optometric Association annual meeting in Indianapolis. Drs. Pence, Malinovsky and Sutton provided the CE for the meeting. July 19-20: During the Black Expo in Indianapolis, our faculty and students participated in a vision screening of the attendees. Dr. Rowan Candy asked that I announce that the Infant Vision Lab is looking for babies under a year old to take part in their studies. Currently they are recording videos of babies as they look at objects at different distances. If anybody knows of little ones who might take part, questions can be answered and appointments arranged by calling 855-4959 or sending e-mail to ibaby@indiana.edu. Dr. Candy would also like to remind everyone that it is a good idea to have babies' eyes checked between 6 and 9 months of age; the infant clinic here at the school is ready and willing to provide those exams. We welcome the new contact lens resident Angeline McLean and ocular disease resident Valerie Childs-Allen. Dr. Jack Downey has arranged for IECC to participate with the Department of Ophthalmology retinal specialists at the IU Medical Center in a study on macular pigment density and the effect of lutein. Dr. Julie Torbit from IECC has taken students to the Southwest Health Center in Indianapolis to provide vision care at the diabetic day clinics.
