Indiana University is seeking nominations and applications for the position of dean of the School of Optometry. Located on the Bloomington campus in a five-story, limestone building, the School of Optometry is building a new campus clinic adjacent to the school that will be opening in one year. The new clinic building will house the Atwater Eye Care Center currently located in the optometry building. The School of Optometry also operates the Community Eye Care Center on the west side of Bloomington, the Indianapolis Eye Care Center near the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis, the IU Eye at Carmel Clinic (in conjunction with the IU School of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology), and a clinic in Guanajuato, Mexico (with the Guanajuato state government). The school has numerous outreach activities in the Indianapolis area and southern Indiana. The school has an active international presence as well--with institutions in Thailand, Hong Kong, China, The Netherlands, and other locations.
The School of Optometry boasts strong professional, research, and graduate programs that take advantage of the opportunities for interdisciplinary studies with other units in the university. The school offers the degrees of Doctor of Optometry, Bachelor of Science in Optometry, and Associate of Science in Optometric Technology/Opticianry. Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in vision science are granted by the IU Graduate School in conjunction with the School of Optometry.
The dean is the school's chief executive officer and is responsible for providing academic and administrative leadership to the faculty as well as representing the school to the university, the profession, alumni, and the community. These responsibilities include strategic planning, fundraising and resource development, staffing, fiscal budgeting, and facility management. The successful candidate for dean must have an exceptional record of academic administration, research, and teaching sufficient to merit the rank of professor. The candidate must also possess the communication and interpersonal skills necessary for the development and maintenance of effective relationships with constituencies in the university, as well as with the alumni, the profession, and the community at large.
The candidate must understand the importance in training and educating future optometrists for excellence in the delivery of patient care, and there must be an understanding of the requirements and opportunities of clinical and laboratory research. Much of the vision research at the school is externally funded, and the dean is expected to maintain a supportive environment for outstanding vision research. The dean is expected to possess a clear vision of the future of optometry; to provide a leadership role in strengthening education, research, and practice programs; and in cultivating close liaison with other academic and professional disciplines. The dean reports to the Chancellor of the Indianapolis campus as well as to the Provost of the Bloomington campus.
