ECCO Outreach Assistant receives award
Maria C. Gabbard received an excellence award from the Consulate of Mexico in Indianapolis on November 2, 2007, for her valuable participation and organization of Binational Health Week. Binational Health Week is an annual week-long series of health promotion and education activities that takes place throughout the United States, Mexico, Canada, and now Guatemala and El Salvador. Binational Health Week events provide migrant Latin/Hispanic and Mexican populations with medical screenings, healthcare referrals, treatment services, and information about disease prevention. This year's schedule included ECCO's Focus on Diabetes Day as part of Binational Health Week events! Focus on Diabetes Day provided eye exams, glasses, flu shots, education, glucometers/test strips, and podiatry services for patients trying to control their diabetes.

Maria Gabbard helped coordinate community volunteers and organization of the fourth annual Focus on Diabetes Day. Maria is an Outreach Assistant for the Eye Care Community Outreach (ECCO) program. The ECCO program, established in 2004, is a unique program created by Indiana University's School of Optometry and School of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology with collaborative efforts from many other community organizations to address the growing need for vision health care services for medically underserved individuals.
