Below zero windchills won't keep the IU School of Optometry Running Team inside. Members kicked off their 2008 training season on Sunday, January 20, despite the near-record chilly temperatures and the blustery wind that made the air feel like a biting negative nine degrees.
"I knew it was really cold when I blinked and my eyelashes stuck together," exclaimed Todd Peabody, O.D., a clinical faculty member and the founder of the team. "But that was part of the fun of it, getting out there, and running despite weather that kept most people indoors."
The optometry students and faculty members who make up the team meet each weekend for group runs along the Bloomington Rails to Trails trail. They run year round with goals, not of winning races, but rather promoting camaraderie and fitness.
The team will participate in the Kentucky Derby Festival MiniMarathon on April 26 in Louisville, Kentucky. The team welcomes new members regardless of speed or skill level. Anyone interested can contact Dr. Peabody at tpeabody@indiana.edu.
