Optician Certification
Graduates of the Optician/Technician Program may become certified by the American Board of Opticianry. Candidates must pass a written certifying examination given at various locations throughout the United States. Certification may be required by the state in which the optician plans to locate. Some states require licensing for opticians and many of these states use the ABO certification exam as part of their licensing process. For more information, contact: ABO/NCLE Paraoptometric Technician Certification Graduates of the Optician/Technician Program may become certified through the American Optometric Association, Paraoptometric Section. Certification is obtained by passing a written and practical examination given at various locations in the United States. Certification for optometric technicians or paraoptometrics in most states, while not required, is recognized in the optometry field as an assurance of the basic knowledge necessary to perform the functions of an optometric technician. ![]() The Paraoptometric Certificate Program (OPAT) is designed for those employed in the optometric and optical fields. It consists of short educational courses for paraoptometric personnel to improve their skill levels through a planned educational process. Paraoptometric Certification Program courses are noncredit-hour courses, so they do not count toward an IU degree. These courses are offered in various locations around the United States.
