IU School of Optometry Optician/Technician Program

In 2001, the first scholarship fund was established for Optician/Technician students. It was named the "Robert G. Corns, O.D., Scholarship" for Optician/Technician students, in memory of my father.

Robert G. Corns, O.D.
He passed away October 26, 2001 after battling cancer. His contributions to the optometry field were many and he was a great supporter of the Optician/Technician Program. He had a successful private practice in Lowell, Indiana for 46 years, served on the State Board of Optometry for 17 years, was president of the Indiana Optometric Association (IOA) in 1959, received IOA’s Optometrist of the Year award in 1966, he was a recipient of IOA’s Distinguished Service Award in 1973 and again in 1985. He dedicated much of his later life to committee work through the American Optometric Association involving legal affairs, licensure and regulations and issues with the Federal Trade Commission. He was a great leader in the field of optometry and I am proud to see his legacy continue through this scholarship.
I invite you to apply for this scholarship. This year, there will be a total of $500 in scholarship money awarded in one or more scholarships. We hope the fund will continue to grow with future contributions. This will increase the amount of funds available for optician/technician scholarships. In the future, keep this in mind if you would like to make a donation, perhaps in honor or in memory of someone.

To be eligible to receive the scholarship, you must plan to be enrolled full-time (12 or more credit hours) as a second year optician/technician student in the fall 2009 semester, demonstrate financial need (documented via completed FAFSA forms)and be in good academic standing after spring, 2009 semester. The application needs to be completed and returned to the Optometry Office of Student Administration by October 10, 2009

The scholarship committee looks forward to receiving your application.
