The IU School of Optometry offers a two-year program in optometric technology leading to the Associate of Science (A.S.) degree. Students completing the program are qualified to begin careers as opticians or optometric technicians. This study offers an excellent entry point into one of the most interesting areas in the health care field. The program takes four semesters to complete, if the student has not taken any college courses. The general, nontechnical courses, such as English composition, may be completed either before or after the technical courses. An additional option allows a student to become a laboratory optician by completing courses in lens surfacing and fabrication (Opticians' Laboratory Concentration).

The Paraoptometric Certificate Program (OPAT) is designed for those employed in the optometric and optical fields. It consists of short educational courses for paraoptometric personnel to improve their skill levels through a planned educational process. Paraoptometric Certification Program courses are noncredit-hour courses, so they do not count toward an IU degree. These courses are offered in various locations around the United States. Visit the IU School of Optometry's Paraoptometric Education Website for information.
