Dr. Brooks teaches in both the Optometry and Optician/Technician Programs. He is probably best known for the textbook System for Ophthalmic Dispensing, which he coauthored with Dr. Irvin Borish. This textbook is an industry standard for optician programs, is used in many optometry schools, and as a reference and training tool in ophthalmic practices. He has written several other textbooks including Essentials of Ophthalmic Lens Finishing and Understanding Lens Surfacing.

In 1995 Dr. Brooks was inducted into the National Academy of Opticianry's Hall of Fame and in 1996 he received the National Federation of Opticianry School's Educator of the Year Award. He is also the Founder and President of FCO International (the Fellowship of Christian Optometrists).

Sandra Pickel is the Associate Director of the Optician/Technician Program and currently teaches V153 Ophthalmic Dispensing and V174 Office Procedures. She has held this position since 1983. From 1976-1982 she was a lecturer and from 1973-1976 was a teaching staff member in the program. She was a clinic staff member from 1972-1973 in the Atwater Eye Care Center at Indiana University School of Optometry. She graduated in August 1972 with an Associate of Science degree in Optometric Technology at Indiana University School of Optometry. In May of 1983, she completed a Bachelor of General Studies from the Indiana University School of Continuing Studies. She is a Certified Paraoptometric Technician (CPOT) through the American Optometric Association Paraoptometric Association and a Certified Optician (ABOC) through the American Board of Opticianry. From 1987-1989, she was a member of the Council on Optometric Education. She is currently a member of the American Optometric Association Paraoptometric Section.

Currently she is teaching V174: Office Procedures, and V153: Ophthalmic Dispensing. She also provides academic advising to prospective students and first-year optometric technology students. Anyone interested in the Optician/Technician Program is encouraged to contact her to discuss the program or for arranging a tour of the School of Optometry facilities.

Dr. Gerstman received his A.B. degree from the University of Illinois in 1966. He received a B.S. in 1968, O.D. in 1969, and M.S. in 1971--all from Indiana University. He was at the Optometric Center of New York in 1969 and in clinical practice from 1969-71. In 1971 in came to Indiana University as Assistant Professor of Optometry and became Associate Professor in 1975. He was Chief of Low Vision/Geriatric Services (1971-72) and Assistant Director of the Division of Patient Care (1980). He became Assistant to the Dean in 1981; Associate Dean for Budgetary & Fiscal Affairs in 1984; and has been Executive Associate Dean for Budgetary Planning & Administration since 1994.

Susan Kovacich received both her undergraduate and O.D. degrees from Indiana University. She then completed a hospital-based optometric residency at the St. Louis Veterans Administration Medical Center. The 1-year residency concentrated on the treatment and management of ocular disease.

Following the residency, she practiced in St. Louis at a multidisciplinary clinic for 5 years, then with a corneal specialist for 4 years. The latter position not only provided challenging patients, but also offered the opportunity to participate in several drug studies. For 2 years during this time, Dr. Kovacich was also a part-time clinical faculty member at the University of Missouri-St. Louis School of Optometry. In l998 Dr. Kovacich joined the IU School of Optometry as an Assistant Clinical Professor. She also assists in the Clinical Assessment and Diagnostic Procedures courses. Dr. Kovacich has served as a clinical examiner for the clinical skills portion of the National Boards. She is also active in ocular health screenings and has been a team leader in the Walk to Prevent Blindness.

Dr. Kovacich has been active in helping Habitat for Humanity build affordable housing for residents of Bloomington.

Dr. Lowther is Dean and Professor of Optometry at the Indiana University School of Optometry. He received his BS in Optometry, OD, MS, and PhD degrees from The Ohio State University. Dr. Lowther is Past President of the American Academy of Optometry, Past President of the International Society for Contact Lens Research, past chair of the Association of Optometric Contact Lens Educators, and diplomate of the Cornea and Contact Lens Section of the American Academy of Optometry.

He teaches the introductory contact lens course at the school. He has conducted research in the areas of contact lens materials, contact lens design, aftercare problems, care systems, and dry eye. He has been a consultant for numerous companies and on the advisory committee for the National Optometry Center of the Ministry of Public Health, People's Republic of China. He is vice president of the National Board of Examiners in Optometry and on the board of the Partnership Foundation for Optometric Education. Dr. Lowther as been active in the development of interactive, multimedia CD ROMs for education.

He has received the John Neill Medal from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, Award for Distinguished Research on the Cornea and Contact Lenses from the University of Houston College of Optometry, and the Distinguished Faculty Award from the Michigan Association of Governing Boards. Dr. Lowther gave the 1994 Max Shapero Memorial Lecture at the American Academy of Optometry meeting. He was elected to the National Academies of Practice. He has authored three books, many chapters for other books, and has over 100 published papers. He has lectured extensively nationally and internationally.

Dr. Elaine Rivron received her optometric qualifications in London and Melbourne and worked in clinical practice for several years before joining the Indiana University School of Optometry in 1985. She currently teaches V201 Anatomy and Physiology of the Eye and V251 Ophthalmic Procedures 2 in the Optician/Technician program. She teaches V517 Histology in the OD program. She also teaches the histology segment of V542 Systems Approach to Biological Systems 1 in the OD program.
