Three-year-old Henry (1917) on the family farm in Huntsburg, Ohio. The coat and hat he was wearing probably belonged to his father. |

A grade school picture. Is that young Henry in the front row? |

Henry Hofstetter at age 16 with a cow he raised (which his daughter always understood that he hated!). |

High school graduation. Hofstetter is second from left. He received a solid education, but as they did not have much of a library, he was teased at Western Reserve for his rather archaic use of language in his writings . . . the modern "turn of phrase" in newer books had not reached Huntsburg, Ohio. |

Early photo of Henry "Hank" Hofstetter. Hofstetter taught all eight grades for three years in the one-room Wilson District school near Huntsburg, Ohio. The students (all but one of whom were Amish) could not understand how their teacher could see behind himself when he faced the chalkboard. They did not know that the glass-framed photo of Washington above the board reflected their antics! At the 50th reunion of these students, many recited back to Hofstetter the little poems he had composed for each of them to recite at the Christmas performance. |

This photo of Hofstetter studying was taken by a roommate during the 1940/41 school year, while Hofstetter's sweetheart Jane was attending Cal-Berkeley. Henry and Jane were married July 5, 1941. |
