Gary S. Hafner, PhD

Dr. Hafner is Professor Emeritus of Optometry and served as Adjunct Professor in the Medical Science Program at Indiana University before his retirement in May 2007. He received his BA from Hanover College in 1965, MA in biology from Drake University in 1967, and PhD from Indiana University 1972 specializing in neurocytology. He also did postdoctoral study in photoreceptor cell biology at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA in Los Angeles, California. He joined the faculty of the IU School of Optometry in 1976 and taught Gross Anatomy and Ocular Anatomy in the optometry curriculum and to graduate students. His research focused on the cell biology of invertebrate photoreceptors and involved studies of the renewal and synthesis of photopigment, the organization and formation of the cytoskeleton in the photoreceptors, as well as investigations of the process of ommatidial pattern formation in the developing retina. All these studies used the freshwater crayfish as an experimental animal.
