Dr. Hegeman is an Associate Professor Emerita of Optometry at the Indiana University School of Optometry and served as Adjunct Associate Professor at the Indiana University School of Medicine before retiring. Her degrees include an AB in Biology from Harvard University, 1960; an MS in Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics from University of California San Francisco Medical Center, 1965; and a PhD in Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics from University of California San Francisco Medical Center, 1969.
Her teaching responsibilities at the School of Optometry had included General Medical Pharmacology and Ocular Pharmacology for Optometry students. In addition she taught several courses in continuing education for optometrists. She still provides continuing education lectures. Dr. Hegeman received "Professor of the Year" honors 10 of the last 13 years. She has not been engaged in research for several years but was very involved with the National Board of Examiners in Optometry as a member of the TMOD and Basic Visual Sciences construction committees. She has been active in helping the optometric profession in a number of states obtain the privilege of using diagnostic and therapeutic drugs. Her service to the Optometry School included membership in 5 committees including Admissions, Library, Honors, Ethics, and Academic Review. She was a former Faculty Presider. Community Service includes serving as a Board Member of the local League of Woman Voters, a member of the EPA Citizen's Information Committee, a member of the Mayor's Advisory Committee on PCBs, and a member of the State of Indiana Committee on Landfill Regulations. She has written several textbook chapters and review articles in pharmacology and has 20+ refereed research articles.
