Dr. Kollbaum has been a lecturer and associate instructor in contact lenses for the Indiana University School of Optometry since returning to IU in 2000 to pursue a PhD in physiological optics. His specific area of research is in contact lens optics and the optics of aging and diseased eyes. He is currently working on several studies to determine the efficacy and feasibility of aberration-correcting contact lenses.

Dr. Kollbaum co-instructs a contact lens class and laboratory to the third-year optometry students and instructs fourth-year students in the contact lens specialty clinic at the school. He has a strong clinical and research interest in contact lenses, especially multifocal and Corneal Refractive Therapy lenses. He has investigated the optical effects of these lenses and is among a group of investigators around the country investigating the effectiveness of these lenses on the control of nearsightedness.

Another interest of Dr. Kollbaum's is keratoconus. He works as a co-investigator in the multi-center CLEK observational study and has performed several other studies dealing with the optics and disease progression of keratoconus.

Dr. Kollbaum has lectured nationally and internationally, as well as served as a research consultant for several contact lens companies. Prior to returning to IU, he worked in a multidisciplinary clinic in Iowa.
