Notes:
Before I begin, it is important to acknowledge the people who have supported and participated in the research that I will be describing today. On this list of colleagues, technical support staff, and institutions who have supported our research, I would like to single out three people for special mention. First is Professor Arthur Bradley, my good friend and close colleague who has given me a decade and a half of inspired collaboration for which I am deeply grateful. Second is Don Miller, a young faculty member who, as a graduate student at University of Rochester pioneered the development of the technology I will be speaking about, and who is now developing his own research program here at IU. Third is Kevin Haggerty, affectionately known in the lab as Mr. Wizzard, who for 15 years has made my every wish his command.
I also gratefully acknowledge the continuous financial support of our research program by the National Eye Institute, by the School of Optometry, and by the University. An institution within our School of particular importance to this research is the Borish Center for Ophthalmic Research, which is the interface between the basic scientific researcher and the clinical scientist who has the skills to apply the new knowledge gained through basic research to important clinical problems.
