Notes:
We know from Don Miller's dissertation research at the Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester prior to coming to Indiana University that if the optical system of the eye is well corrected, it becomes possible to view the smallest neurons of the retina, the photoreceptors.
This slide shows the most recent photograph of the array of cones in a living eye taken by the research team of David Williams, who was Don's mentor at U. Rochester. To capture such a high-quality photo, which rivals that obtained with research-grade microscopes on excised tissue, is a stunning technical achievement. One of Don Miller's goals is to reproduce this achivement here at Indiana and to apply that technology for the benefit of clinical optometry and ophthalmology.
