The fact that resolution is sampling limited rather than contrast limited in the periphery puts a whole new light on our interpretation of the contrast sensitivity funciton. In the fovea it is permissible to think of the resolution limit as that frequency for which sensitivity drops to the absolute threshold of unity. In the periphery, however, sensitivity is still well above unity when the sampling limit to resolution is encountered. The range of frequencies for which the system is still sensitive enough to detect a pattern, but does not have the necessary sampling density to resolve the pattern, is the aliasing zone shown here by the shaded area.
