If motion discrimination becomes the preferred task for estimating cell densities, then we have to return to the prior issue of what types of retinal ganglion cell mediate visual performance for this task. The answer seems to be that it is the same class of cell that supports pattern resolution, namely, the P-class.

This result may be surprising to some since many people have the mistaken impression that the peripheral field is dominated by M-cells and that M-cells are responsible for motion perception.
