Another way to look at Wang's results is to plot the depth of field for resolution in a object space using a dioptric scale. The thick line is conjugate to the retina - we know that because a grating with this vergence maximizes detection acuity. However, the target can be moved several diopters in front of, or behind, the optimum distance without affecting resolution acuity for a high-contrast grating.
The very large depth of field for resolution revealed by these experiments indicate that spatial resolution is likely to remain sampling limited even if peripheral refractive errors are not carefully corrected. This is good news for anyone interested in applying these methods to clincial conditions.
