Additional Information

The ocular disease optometric residency program at Bennett & Bloom Eye Centers (BBEC) is an intensive, office based program that provides an extensive anterior and posterior segment ocular disease diagnosis and management experience. BBEC is a secondary and tertiary referral center providing solely medical and surgical eye care services. BBEC has two vitreo-retinal surgeons, two anterior segment surgeons and two residency trained consultative optometrists. The resident will spend time with all of these services and will be caring for patients with all aspects of eye disease including retinal diseases, glaucoma, uveitis, external and anterior segment diseases as well as pre- and post-surgical cataract and refractive surgical care. The resident can expect to learn both routine management of patients plus diagnosis and management of complications. BBEC has state-of-the-art equipment including OCT, GDx, A- and B-Scan Ultrasonography, fundus photography/fluorescein angiography, Orbscan, IOL Master, Humphrey Field Analyzers, B&L Technolas 217z excimer laser, VISX S4 excimer laser, and SLT, Argon, Diode, YAG and other lasers. The resident can expect to learn the indications for the use or/and interpretation of the above. A case presentation and/or a publishable article is expected by the optometric resident.

BBEC is based in Louisville, Kentucky, a picturesque metropolitan community of about 1 million people. This community offers something for everyone and is home to cultural amenities including live theater, orchestra, ballet, sports, museums and a zoo and Churchill Downs. The area's outdoor activities include numerous golf courses, hunting, fishing and boating. The community is home to several colleges and universities. Despite all of these offerings, the area maintains a small town flavor.
