Beginning in late summer 2004, the Vision Science Program at the IU School of Optometry, in conjunction with the University Graduate School, announced an entirely new program for the development of clinical scientists.

The Vision Science Program offered two clinical postdoctoral positions leading to a Ph.D. in Vision Science. One was in the area of the cornea, and the other in visual optics. This is a clinical scientist development program, funded by the National Eye Institute (NEI). Trainees receive full fee remission and a salary equivalent to that of new clinical faculty positions. This is a unique opportunity for those interested in patient-based research.

Qualifications include holding a clinical doctorate (M.D., Ph.D., O.D., or D.V.M.) earned within the last 5 years. Residency or similar training is highly desirable but not required. Applicants must either be licensed in their field or be board-eligible. In addition, this opportunity is available only to US citizens or permanent residents.

Selection is based on a number of factors, including the professional school academic record, the personal statement, the quality of clinical experience, and references assessing the applicant's promise as a clinical vision scientist.
