The Dean's Research Scholarship program funds students to spend 8 weeks in the laboratory of a vision scientist during the summer. Six IU School of Optometry students will be selected based on academic excellence and interest in research. The program begins in May and will end by July 4. In general, the student is expected to work 40 hours/week.
The goal is for the student to participate in a research project in a way that could lead to a published paper and a presentation at a scientific meeting. Dean's Research Scholars will have opportunities to present their research at meetings of the American Academy of Optometry (AAO) and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). Dean's Research Scholars will receive financial support of $3462 for the 8 weeks of the program. (An additional benefit is that the research project can be considered as a research topic for V889 Special Projects, a required course for all optometry students. The course must be completed before graduation, usually at some time during the third year of the optometry program.)
Research Day is held in January every year. On this occasion, all first-year students tour the research laboratories in the School of Optometry. If you are interested in applying to the program, this is a good time to be thinking about a potential mentor.
Applications to the program should state why you are interested in this research award and whether you have had any prior research experience. You should also give the name of the faculty member who has agreed to serve as your mentor during the summer. Submit the application to Dr. Graeme Wilson before February 15. A committee will review applications, and decisions will be made by March 15.
