The Beta Sigma Kappa International Optometric Honor Society has local chapters at each of the seventeen schools and colleges of optometry in the United States. The group permits a student in an optometry school to join if his/her academic record is outstanding, and a practitioner who maintains membership after graduation must maintain an exemplary type of professional practice. The parent organization supports student research with annual grants to underwrite costs related to student projects.

The purposes are to honor academic achievement, encourage optometric research, and recognize those optometrists who embody professional and ethical attributes.

Eligibility criteria for membership in BSK are:

  • Cumulative grade point average of 3.50 after the first professional year
  • Cumulative grade point average of 3.40 after the second professional year
  • Cumulative grade point average of 3.30 after the third professional year
  • Cumulative grade point average of 3.20 after the first half of the fourth professional year
