Many practicing optometrists have expressed to us that optometry school did not fully prepare them for the business side of running a practice. The optometry school curriculum covers so much medical and clinical material, there is only time for limited practice management preparation. How can we prepare ourselves for the business of optometry? Enter the OPPC! We are a student-led organization designed to supply members with the basic business knowledge, specific to optometry, which will enable them to become motivated and business-savvy doctors. The OPPC is not so much a club as it is an educational organization aimed at taking away the business learning curve that exists for going into private practice.
The IU OPPC has gained national recognition and has a strong support system of over 100 optometrists, consultants, and other professionals from across the country. These individuals contribute to the club by participating in surveys, offering advice, and coming to speak at meetings. Doctor surveys allow us to tap into the knowledge of highly successful doctors, and from them, we've created valuable reference materials that you can use now and in your future practice.
The OPPC currently has six formal meetings a year, with dinner and a guest speaker. This year's speakers were highly successful private practice doctors from both in-state and out-of-state and included an OD/MBA, an OD/JD, and the AOA president. The spring schedule also included a weekend workshop, "The Optometric Student Practice Management Symposium," hosted by Dr. Ben Gaddie of Louisville and IU grad Dr. Scot Morris of Conifer, CO. Additionally, we have several programs and projects currently in development, including: a practice management website, a doctor shadowing program, and a business resource center.
So how can you get involved with the IU OPPC? Look for our signup table during first year orientation and watch for OPPC emails when you get to campus. Membership is open to all optometry students. If you are interested in private practice optometry and acquiring important business management skills, then you should join this cutting-edge club!
